Overview

The Junior Counselor, under the direct supervision of the Program Director, is responsible for assisting the day camp counselor in the health, safety, and welfare of day campers, demonstrate leadership and show active participation in programs, skill periods and camp related activities. Serve as a positive and wholesome role model to all campers and staff. Junior Counselors will help create an environment that promotes belonging, achievement and relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Assist counselors with program participant supervision, never to be alone with program participants or left as the sole supervision for children.
  • Assist in various program areas (i.e., Pool, Waterfront).
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in staff planning committees.
  • Attend trainings.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and refrain from behavior that will affect staff morale.
  • Assist counselors in maintaining program participant belongings in an orderly and clean fashion.
  • Assist with teaching of skills periods choice activities.
  • Assist other counselors with leading songs when needed.
  • Participate and ensure cleanliness in trash detail of your assigned area in camp during "all camp cleanup".
  • Be available and flexible to provide support and fill in at any area of the day camp as needed.
  • Encouraged to redirect participants if their behavior warrants. They may not be disciplined or be responsible for discipline. Report any concerns or issues with a participant to a counselor or program director.
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members, or guests as well as your own health concerns to your supervisor.
  • Follow all staff policies and procedures at all times especially those related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.

Other Responsilities

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with campers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Must have completed the YMCA Counselor in Training program.
  • Must pass the CPR and First Aid Certifications. 
  • Must complete all child abuse prevention training.

Preferred 

  • Knowledge or experience in afterschool, camp, childcare activities.
