The Summer Lifeguard ensures safety in YMCA pools and aquatics areas to all members, guests, and program participants, enforces rules and guidelines in accordance with YMCA policies, responds to member and guest needs, provides customer service, and maintains a safe aquatics environment.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates and enforces aquatics rules and guidelines to insure a safe working environment.
  • Properly opens, performs daily tasks, and closes aquatics area each day according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, fully stocked and well organized work area.
  • Handles and resolves aquatics concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Provides accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
  • Works without constant direct supervision and remains at assigned post for extended periods of time.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and contributes toward a quality work environment.
  • Maintains positive relations at all times with members, participants, and co-workers.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.

Qualifications

  • Current lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, & AED Certification (American Red Cross or YMCA).
  • Able to communicate and enforce policies and procedures to members, program participants, and guests.
  • Able to react quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Complete Blood Bourne Pathogen and  Child Abuse Prevention training within first 30-days of employment.

Lifeguard Certification is required prior to being hired as a lifeguard.
