Overview

The Swim Instructor for the Summer Outreach Program is responsible for teaching swimming skills and water safety to youth participants. This individual will serve as a positive role model and create a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach swimming lessons to youth (ages 4–17), focusing on fundamental strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
  • Demonstrate and instruct proper swim techniques and water safety practices.
  • Adapt lessons to accommodate the needs and skill levels of individuals and groups.
  • Ensure participant safety by conducting routine safety checks and maintaining compliance with pool rules.
  • Serve as a positive role model by displaying professionalism, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
  • Communicate regularly and clearly with supervisors, parents, and participants about goals, progress, and safety expectations.
  • Assist the Swim Coordinator in tracking attendance, swim skill levels, and participant progress.
  • Manage YMCA equipment transported to off-site outreach locations.
  • Work off-site and liaise directly with management at participating apartment communities.
  • Support overall program logistics and help maintain a high-quality, community-focused outreach initiative.

Other expectations

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years old with at least 1 year of experience
  • Knowledge about conducting swim lessons and related operations
  • Strong swimming skills and thorough knowledge of swimming fundamentals and water safety.
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach basic swim strokes and water safety skills.
  • Must complete New Staff Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, and Blood Borne Pathogen training within the first 30-days of employment.
  • Lifeguard Certification (current or obtained before program start).
  • CPR/First Aid Aquatics Certification & AED Certification, and Oxygen Certification (current or obtained before program start).

BENEFICIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with children and teens is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to connect with supervisors, parents, and young participants.
  • Reliable, friendly, and committed to the program schedule.
