Overview

The YMCA of Greenville is looking for our next innovative and dynamic cause-driven leader who wants to live thier passion and bring meaningful change to the community as our next Group Exercise Director for the Eastside Family YMCA.

 

The Group Exercise Director supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position is responsible for the complete member experience in the Group Fitness and Exercise area (Land & Water). The Group Exercise Director leads the group exercise staff in improving and maintaining member experience, develop staff around membership service goals, develop health and fitness programming that serves basic member needs and various interests, lead programming for Active Older Adults, and ensure the safety, fitness, and well-being of members.

Responsibilities

Program Development & Management

  • Organize and develop a variety of group fitness programs and schedules for all age populations and interests.
  • Supervise and evaluate the group exercise programs including formulating and tracking of programs, team members, equipment operations, maintenance and inventory.
  • Schedule group exercise instructors for each class, site, and classroom.
  • Communicate programs and schedules through Y website and various Apps as required.
  • Ensure program areas and equipment are clean and safe, and that facility and equipment repairs/replacement is performed promptly in a cost-effective manner.
  • Develop and meet and/or exceed monthly and annual program enrollment goals.
  • Fills in and teaches classes, as necessary.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Commit to recruiting, hiring, training, and overseeing quality staff who possess a servant attitude, member service skills, and who meet the physical assessment and certification requirements for the YMCA of Greenville.
  • Provide leadership for group exercise staff to ensure delivery of consistent, safe, and excellent service to all participants.
  • Oversee payroll and cumulative hours for each group exercise staff member and part-time coordinators and/or administrative help if applicable.

Member Engagement & Service

  • Actively engage members of the YMCA through excellent service, personal attention, and relationship building behaviors/activities including answering questions and addressing member concerns through phone and email.
  • Create wellness social opportunities or events for members to participate in and outside of the facility.

Fiscal & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Show strong fiscal stewardship through the annual development and monthly managing/monitoring/reporting/forecasting.

Community & Organizational Involvement

  • Actively pursue corporate relationships and memberships for the YMCA of Greenville.
  • Participate in and help meet departmental/branch goals for annual campaign.
  • Serve as a representative of the YMCA of Greenville at community events.
  • Participate on wellness committees and cabinets as assigned by leadership, as hours allow.
  • Intentionally and continuously strive to promote an organizational culture that advances practices and policies which value staff engagement, diversity, strengthens inclusion, and builds global community in the US and abroad.

Other Expectations

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
    • Front Desk Personnel- ensure consumers are properly signed in and out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.
  • Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violation using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors

Qualifications

*Compensation will be determined commensurate qualifications and experience.*

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent education/experience in Exercise Science, Health and Wellness or related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in group fitness and exercise.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of supervisory experience, leading teams of 20+
  • Must hold current, nationally recognized primary group exercise certification from NETA, ACSM, OR ACE) & CPR/AED.
  • Capacity to teach multiple disciplines of group exercise classes, including both land and water exercise e.g., cycle, TRX, and must have a certification for each specialty class assigned to teach.
  • Will be expected to teach multiple formats of group exercise classes when needed and must have specific certifications for those classes.
  • Have a positive history of leadership in the areas of staff development, fiscal budgeting, management, and program development techniques.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain favorable relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
