Camp Greenville is an overnight camp established in 1912 that hosts boys and girls from throughout the region and the world for summer camps, retreats and specialty camps. You will get to experience what the great outdoors of Western North Carolina and South Carolina have to offer.

 

The Camp Leadership & Engagement Manager supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Base Camp & Family Programs, the Camp Leadership & Engagement Manager advances the mission of YMCA Camp Greenville through oversight of Camp Leadership programs including but not limited to the Teen Leadership Development Programs. Additionally, this role is part of the program leadership team at camp to provide the highest level of service possible in all areas of program staffing, design, delivery, health and safety management and budget control.

Responsibilities

Primary Leadership & Program Oversight

  • Manages the summer and year-round Leadership Development Program to ensure the highest quality program delivery, compliance with industry standards, and increased enrollment.
  • Coordinate and implement the Leadership Development Program and logistics including recruitment, interviews, summer scheduling, retreats, and year-round engagement.
  • Develops, implements, and plans innovative programs to maximize participation and impact.
  • Create and maintain a strong staff and LDP (Leadership Development Program) culture through engagement and retention initiatives.
  • Support and coordinate the cultural exchange programs ensuring a meaningful experience for J-1 visa participants.
  • Conduct end-of-summer follow-ups to gather feedback from staff and LDP participants for continuous program improvement and retention of staff
  • Participate in meetings, training, and off-site committees to enhance overall camp programming.
  • Represent the YMCA at meetings and committees relevant to the position, including professional organizations like ACA and YMCA.

Program Logistics & Planning

  • Track retention and pipeline data from LDP participants transitioning to staff roles.
  • Assist with logistics for summer Base Camp programming and family camp weekends.
  • Manage and maintain program equipment and supply inventories within budget constraints and equipment replacement protocols.
  • Together with program leadership, assists with the training of all staff and serves as the lead trainer in key program/safety areas, maintaining relevant certifications.
  • Ensure that physical spaces and resources support high-quality program execution.

Staff Management & Training

  • Assist with recruiting, training, supervising, and scheduling high-quality, mission-minded staff and volunteers for family camp weekends and the summer camp team.
  • Support the recruitment and selection process of leadership development program participants.
  • Foster an inclusive and connected culture among staff and LDPs to enhance engagement and program quality.
  • Ensure compliance with screening policies and provide ongoing training, supervision, and feedback related to abuse prevention.
  • Monitor staff boundaries and adherence to policies, implementing progressive disciplinary action as needed.
  • Serve as Supervisor on Duty when assigned, ensuring the smooth operation of camp.

Operational Support & Safety

  • Work with the staff team to ensure the smooth and safe operation of camp.
  • Serve in the "Staff on Duty" role as assigned for weekends, stayovers, and summer evenings.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures and compliance with program standards..
  • Work with the direct supervisor to develop and monitor the program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Be present during office hours at Camp Greenville as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Lead and support year-round camp events and programming.
  • Maintain physical readiness to respond to emergencies and lead emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Supervise and manage high-risk activities to ensure a safe and engaging experience for all participants.

Communication & Administration

  • Adhere to communication protocols, including office and desk work, timely message return, meeting deadlines for form submission, appropriate phone, internet, and radio communication, conflict resolution, and schedule/calendar upkeep.
  • Maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
  • Take reports of suspicious or inappropriate behavior seriously, ensuring they are addressed properly
  • Address members and community inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Contribute to the Annual Campaign with a personal fundraising goal of $500.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work flexible, non-traditional hours, including early mornings and evenings.

Other Expectations

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
  • Follow employees and volunteers’ screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behavior.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicate with all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.

Qualifications

*Compensation will be determined commensurate qualifications and experience.*

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in a field compatible with the mission and work of the YMCA
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in program development and management including budgeting, recruiting, staffing, training
  • Six months to a year of overnight summer camping experience
  • Current certification in/or ability to complete CPR, 1st Aid, AED training
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the minimum requirements of the YMCA insurance carrier
  • Professional experience working with varied groups including children, adolescents, college students, adults, parents, teachers
  • Must have good interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make oral presentations.
  • Must be able to effectively work with and motivate other staff and volunteers
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Incumbent must complete mandatory training of New Staff Orientation, BBP/Child Abuse Prevention and CPR/1st Aid/AED training within 30 days of employment.
  • On-site housing is provided

BENEFICIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to speak two or more languages preferred.
  • Microsoft Office skills preferred
