Overview

The YMCA of Greenville is a dynamic and rapidly growing association that seeks to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

 

The Sports Performance Coach supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role is responsible for supervising activities and assisting in planning, coordinating, and participating in the youth fitness and Multisport training program. They will focus on the athletic development and sports specific training for athletes with varying sports backgrounds and abilities, with day-to-day interaction with parents, coaches, and athletes. These activities are planned for youth between the ages of 8-18 years of age.

Responsibilities

Program Delivery & Member Engagement

  • Create a safe, welcoming environment that promotes respect and belonging.
  • Lead energizing, educational, and developmentally appropriate group sessions aligned with YMCA wellness goals.
  • Design and implement strength, speed, agility, and endurance programs.
  • Conduct fitness assessments for youth athletes and track measurable progress.
  • Provide ongoing encouragement and recognize member achievements.

Safety & Supervision

  • Ensure participants are supervised at all times.
  • Maintain equipment setup, organization, and safety during sessions.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergencies as needed.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Complete and adhere to all child protection, abuse prevention, and mandated reporting requirements.
  • Attend all required risk management and safety trainings.
  • Maintain boundaries and uphold the YMCA’s Code of Conduct.

Other Expectations

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities

Qualifications

Certifications & Training

  • National certification in Personal Training, CSCS, Group Fitness Instruction (e.g., ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM), Youth Conditioning, or YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification
  • Certification in area of expertise

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of two years of professional experience administering sport or fitness programs for young athletes(preferred)
  • At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes(preferred)
  • Previous experience in high school or collegiate athletics
  • Equivalent education or experience will be considered

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology
  • Strong ability to build positive, authentic relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Exceptional member service and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Marketing and sales aptitude
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and email applications
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Personal passion for health, wellness, and fitness promotion

Required during employment

  • Completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogen and CPR/First Aid training within first 30-days of employment.
