The Functional Fitness Instructor (Y-Rox) supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The instructor is responsible to lead high-quality functional fitness classes (Y-Rox) classes in a safe, inclusive, and motivating environment. This role creates engaging workouts, ensures proper exercise technique, builds relationships with members, promotes YMCA wellness programs, and supports the YMCA's mission of strengthening spirit, mind, and body.

Responsibilities

Class Instruction & Participant Safety

  • Plans and delivers safe, engaging, and effective Beast Mode functional fitness classes.
  • Begins and ends classes on time.
  • Provides clear instruction, demonstrations, coaching, and exercise modifications for participants of varying fitness levels.
  • Ensures every class includes an appropriate warm-up, workout, cool-down, and stretching period.
  • Monitors participant technique and provides corrective feedback to promote safety and reduce injury risk.
  • Maintains current knowledge of functional fitness programming and incorporates appropriate training methods into classes.
  • Knows and follows YMCA emergency procedures and understands the location and use of First Aid and AED equipment.

Member Experience & Engagement

  • Creates a welcoming, inclusive, and motivating environment that reflects the YMCA's mission and values.
  • Builds relationships with members by greeting participants, learning names, and encouraging continued participation.
  • Promotes YMCA wellness programs, events, and additional fitness offerings.
  • Encourages member retention by fostering a positive and supportive class culture.
  • Represents the YMCA professionally and serves as a positive ambassador for the organization.

Operations & Program Support

  • Arrives prepared to teach each class and ensures all equipment and music are ready before class begins.
  • Performs visual inspections of equipment before and after classes and reports damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe workout environment by returning equipment and sanitizing surfaces after each class.
  • Reports participant injuries, incidents, and unsafe conditions and completes required documentation before leaving the facility.
  • Works collaboratively with supervisors and fellow instructors, including assisting with substitute coverage when available.
  • Communicates participant feedback, attendance trends, and equipment needs to the supervisor.

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
    • Maintenance Employees-ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
    • Front Desk Personnel- ensure consumers are properly signed in and out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of current CrossFit Level 1 Certification, HYROX, USA Weightlifting Certification, or another National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
  • Must be proficient with CrossFit exercises, have experience with Olympic Lifting and be able to instruct to all ability levels with proper modifications.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current CPR/AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention and BBP certification.
  • Excellent member service skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, & physiology.
  • Ability to promote YMCA wellness programs and engage members in available services.
  • Basic computer skills involving Microsoft Office and email.
  • Desire for health, wellness, and fitness promotion.
  • Ability to perform under stress and reach deadlines.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Personal passion for health and fitness.

  • Must be able to constantly remain in an upright position
  • Must be able to frequently move about the facilities as well as squat/kneel and bend.
  • Constantly communicate with program participants and must be able to exchange accurate and appropriate directions.
  • Frequently lifts program supplies up to 100 pounds. Frequently lifts and moves fitness equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently and heavier equipment with assistance.
